A potential hub for the clean economy
Thursday, September 12 at 3 pm ET – ReImagine Appalachia and Keystone Research Center mapped the region’s historic manufacturing strengths and discussed the role these assets can play in a 21st Century Sustainable Economy.
Appalachia has a strong history of manufacturing, but where exactly are different manufacturing hubs located, and how can we build on each community’s unique strengths to create future opportunities? We mapped out the region’s competitiveness across different manufacturing sectors and provided an overview of the industrial economy within our region. Participate in a discussion of how these factors position the Ohio River Valley of Appalachia to become a manufacturing hub in the new clean economy. Then, help us start building the roadmap for how we get from here to there.
Speakers Will Include
Stephen Herzenberg, executive director of the Keystone Research Center (KRC) and co-director of ReImagine Appalachia.
Amanda Woodrum, co-director of ReImagine Appalachia.
Bikash Gupta, Sustainable Manufacturing Analyst with ReImagine Appalachia.

RMI’s Clean Growth Tool now includes county-level data. Would love to hear your take on it in the context of this important work! https://rmi.org/clean-growth-tool/ Please feel free to reach out directly, Aaron Brickman, at [email protected]. (Note: The Clean Growth Tool matches cities and regions across the United States to clean energy industries and technologies. The tool incorporates data on the strengths of each area and the needs of each clean energy industry.)
Steve Herzenberg – If YOU or people you know could potentially do research that would benefit from some of the Brookings/RMI numbers (LQs. feasibility, complexity), we at RA might be able to get you those numbers then you add your industry-specific knowledge and write a co-branded brief. From ReImagine’s perspective, the folks on this call are a “team.” Please email Bikash Gupta <[email protected]>.
Molly Updegrove with ReImagine Appalachia – if you would like to learn more about our work overall or have any questions about us, reach out! [email protected]
This event is part of our Fall 2024 Make it an Appalachia series, an ongoing series of presentations exploring opportunities within Appalachia’s manufacturing sector, from growing feedstocks to producing final products. This series of listening sessions will explore the specific opportunities to leverage the region’s historical assets for the new energy economy and create a hub for sustainable manufacturing. Appalachians should have a say in the work to keep opportunities in the region and support the creation of a 21st century economy that’s good for workers, communities, and the environment.
