Celebrating Juneteenth 2026: Your Quick Guide Juneteenth Events Across Central Appalachia and How You Can Participate

June 11, 2026

Juneteenth, held every year on June 19, is a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday recognizes June 19, 1865, the date when Union troops arrived in Galveston, TX, and informed some of the last enslaved people in the Confederacy of their freedom. This was two years after Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation declared that enslaved people within Confederate-controlled territory were free and Union troops began to enforce emancipation as they advanced.

This day of reflection is celebrated by many communities throughout Appalachia. If you have been looking for a way to participate in Juneteenth this year, we have some great opportunities to present to you! Here, we highlight a few of the many Juneteenth celebrations taking place this year around the region.
