APPALACHIA – Thursday, November 5th at 11am ET via Zoom, ReImagine Appalachia will host a virtual session in which expert panelists will discuss Appalachia’s finite water distribution capacity and how communities could safeguard their supplies from thirsty data centers.
The Appalachian region has abundant water. However, degraded infrastructure and pollution from industrial history, such as acid mine drainage, often limit how much of it communities can access. States like West Virginia are aggressively courting tech companies, but without responsible development measures, AI data centers threaten to siphon water away from communities to cool their servers.
In this session, experts will give an overview of steps communities can take to protect their water systems. Speakers will also discuss how much water facilities typically use, the water permitting process, and more water-efficient cooling methods that could be utilized by new facilities.
Speakers will include:
- Amy Adams, Deputy Director at the Southeast Climate and Energy Network (SCEN)
