Appalachian industries provided the ticket to the middle class for many families until mines closed and corporations pulled out. But the industrial backbone of the economy survived, based on a dense network of strong businesses in diverse sectors, a central location with proximity to the East Coast and the Midwest, a plentiful and skilled workforce, transportation access by rail, water, and road, and lots of land for development with good connections to the grid. Appalachia has the proper foundation for growth and looks forward to hosting reshoring manufacturing plants and turning Appalachia into a hub for sustainable manufacturing.
